What is the difference between Elevation™ and Elevation LE™? Which one should I buy?
|
It really comes down whether you intend to record with Elevation™. For practicing musicians, the ability to both loop and slow down practice material and also record yourself with or without accompaniment has proven to be an effective practice method.
For music educators, a simple software recorder for documenting lessons and rehearsals is a big help if you have a computer in your classroom or rehearsal space. The full version of Elevation™ provides recording capabilities, plus the ability to organize student practice material and recordings into playlists.
Both versions of Elevation™ allow you to create new audio files at different tempos, keys, without vocals, etc.
You can then burn to CD any recordings or modified sound files directly from Elevation™. If your recording and CD burning needs are taken care of and you simply need a high quality tool for transcribing audio or creating custom audio files, then saving money with Elevation LE™ is the way to go.

Can I export files directly from Elevation™ to my iTunes library?

For Mac: Select a track from the Elevation library or snapshot from the snapshot window.

- From the Export File dialog box, choose the file format to export. If you are exporting a snapshot, choose the
Number of Repetitions. Click OK. The Export Track To File box will open.
- In the Save As field, type the name of your file and add the extension. For example: Jazz_solo.mp3.

Can I use Elevation™ with Finale?
|
While there are no features that work directly with Finale, Elevation™ can be used simultaneously with Finale. You may record to Elevation™ while reading from Finale (note: Finale playback does not sync with Elevation™), or analyze an audio file in Elevation™ while transcribing in Finale. When you are finished, you may drag and drop the Finale file into the Elevation™ file's Info screen. The files will now be 'linked', so the next time you open the Elevation™ file, you can click the file's 'Open Link' button and quickly launch the Finale transcription associated with the audio in Elevation™.

I teach voice and piano lessons and direct two children’s choirs. Is this system fairly portable so that I can take it with me?
|
Yes! If you plan to install Elevation on a laptop computer, then transporting your laptop to lessons and choir rehearsals is perfectly reasonable: we do it all the time.
You have the option of recording with your computer's internal microphones, or adding a USB mic or USB interface with external mic (all accessories offered in Superscope's Online Store). Superscope USB accessories fit into a computer bag with no difficulty setting up and recording at remote locations.
If you plan to install Elevation on desktop computers at different locations, (e.g. home studio and school rehearsal room), then an individual user license limits you to two installations (two computers total at different locations). In this case, you would only need to transport accessories if suitable mic options are not available at each location.

I have a Superscope PSD300 CD Recorder. Does Elevation™ software accentuate the PSD300’s voice suppression attributes?
|
Yes! Here’s how:
As a PSD300 owner, you know that vocal reduction is handled with a simple ‘VR’ ON/OFF button. When you switch the VR algorithm ON, the Right and Left channels of stereo recordings are placed 180 degrees out of phase to remove the ‘center channel’ where most lead vocal tracks are positioned. Additional filtering preserves frequencies outside the range of the human voice.
This type of VR only works when the original lead vocal was recorded to the center of the stereo mix (for example, many Beatles recordings were not ‘panned’ to the center and will be unaffected when VR is on). The output of the VR processor is also monophonic.
Fortunately, Elevation's Voice Reduction algorithm maintains the stereo separation of the original recording. There are also several additional controls that allow you to hone in on the lead vocal track for greater suppression:
- Keep Vocal Only - An option to listen to the vocal while removing accompaniment.
- Panning Control allows you to remove vocals that are panned ‘off-center.’
- Vocal Type allows you to control filtering so that more vocal and less accompaniment is removed.
Elevation also includes a graphic EQ and a unique Balance control, so that you can better isolate elements of your recordings.

I want to record my voice with pre-recorded audio tracks ‘Karaoke style.’ I used software to hook my Karaoke machine to my computer and ran the music to the software, then recorded my voice as many times as I wanted until I liked what I did. Will Elevation™ do this?
|
Elevation™ is designed to do the exact function you are interested in. If you have Karaoke accompaniment tracks in your Elevation™ library, simply select a track and click the Record button.
If you have a microphone connected to your computer (Superscope's online store offers USB interface boxes along with an assortment of mics, USB or standard), you simply sing over the accompaniment track, review your performance - adjusting mix levels if necessary, and click the Save button. If the performance is not worth saving, just click the Record button again and redo the recording.
If you are using a pre-recorded stereo track as accompaniment, Elevation™ offers a Voice Reduction (VR) feature to help you reduce the vocals in the accompaniment track before adding your own. All recordings are saved to your library. You can then select the best performances and burn them to CD.

What is the easiest way to get my music from iTunes to ElevationTM (Mac)?
|
Any WAV, AIFF, or MP3 file in your iTunes library can be imported into ElevationTM. Drag the file from your iTunes window to your desktop, and then drag the file to the Elevation™ library window. If you are unsure of the format of an iTunes track, simply right click ([control] + click) the file in question and select Get Info to view file information.
To convert an iTunes track to one of Elevation’s accepted formats, select iTunes > Preferences. Click Import Settings to view your current encoder setting. Select WAV encoder, AIFF encoder, or MP3 encoder and click OK.
When you right click ([control] + click) a track in iTunes, you will see an option to create a WAV version, AIFF version, or MP3 version of the file depending on your encoder settings. Once this option is selected, iTunes will create a new version of the song that can be imported into Elevation.
Tracks purchased from the iTunes store prior to April 2009 employ digital rights management (DRM), which prevents these tracks from being converted to other formats. iTunes 7.2 allows you to upgrade your library of previously purchased songs to the DRM-free iTunes Plus format for an additional fee.
If you do not choose to upgrade, it is possible to burn your DRM tracks to CD (as long as you have not exceeded your limit on CD copies) and then import the CD tracks to Elevation™.
By selecting File > Import File… in Elevation™, you can also import tracks directly from your iTunes Music folder (Music/iTunes/iTunes Music).

How does ElevationTM help me with composition?
|
If you like to sing/play melody and harmony lines before converting them
to paper, ElevationTM provides a simple interface to quickly record,
review your recording, save or delete the last take, and move on.
If you record an idea you want to build on, ElevationTM allows you to quickly
begin layering audio (harmony) on top of the main recording. Once again,
you can save or discard the new file easily.
You don't need to be a recording engineer. ElevationTM is designed so
musicians can maintain a steady workflow when practicing or composing
music.
If you work with a notation program such as Sibelius or Finale,
simply drag and drop the notation file into the File Info screen for your
ElevationTM recording and the two files will be linked. The next time you
listen to your recorded demos in ElevationTM, simply click Open in the
Linked File field of the File Info screen and your transcription will
launch in your notation program. |
I was unable to adjust Key, Tempo, and Fine Tuning with my mouse. How do these controls work?
|
Whether a file is playing or stopped, simply click the Key, Tempo, or Fine Tune control and maneuver the mouse up to increase or down to decrease the value.
If your mouse has a scroll wheel, you may also adjust Tempo, Key, or Fine Tune settings by positioning the mouse pointer over the Tempo, Key, or Fine Tune control and rotating the scroll wheel. |
When I play a song in ElevationTM, the audio is distorted.
|
If audio distorts or ‘breaks up’ during playback, try increasing the audio buffer size.
Select Application > Preferences.
The following Preferences menu will appear:

Select Buffer Size and choose a higher setting. Increasing audio buffer size will also increase latency. If latency is too high, try decreasing this setting.

I am unable to install ElevationTM on my Mac. A message states that Elevation.app is not supported on this architecture.
|
Make sure you are not attempting to install ElevationTM
on a PPC (pre-Intel) Mac. Elevation runs on Intel Macs only.
